Season Evans is a self-taught quilter who is known for her striking minimalist compositions, often inspired by traditional quilt patterns. She has taught at QuiltCon and exhibited quilts all over the country and internationally. She explores pattern, geometry, and contrast in her work, and her quilts tell stories about the places she lives and contemporary life.
On Saturday, October 20, Season will lead a workshop called Minimalist Improvisation at Loyola University’s Lakeshore Campus in Chicago.
The objective of the workshop is to create a minimalist patchwork panel using improvisational techniques. Challenge your process by restraining the number of fabrics used and paring down choices through thoughtful subtraction. The goal is to minimize patchwork and color to get to the essence of the quilt panel until it becomes simply the abstraction of an idea.
Especially if you are not a minimalist or even an improv piecer, this process will remind you to make stronger coordinating and contrasting fabric selections, to refine the focus in your original designs (and even in the patterns you follow), and to incorporate negative space more effectively.

This challenge is a great way to practice the mindfulness of a minimalist process:
- Find your focus
- Restraint: start with and stick to a limited number of fabrics
- Use only what is necessary
- Subtract whenever possible
- Negative space does not always mean empty – even if it is. Recognize and give it a purpose and it will be meaningful.
We will be meeting in a wonderful auditorium space on the Loyola University Lakeshore Campus in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. The workshop runs from 10am to 2pm. Lunch will not be provided but there are many options that are just off campus or you can eat in a dining hall for a small fee. Parking is $7 for the day in parking garage next door to our workshop space but does not have in and out privileges–there is very limited parking in the neighborhood, so we recommend using the garage. More details will be available in an email a few weeks before the workshop.
Cost to members of the Chicago MQG will be $65, and $75 to non-members.

Sign-ups will go live to members on Wednesday, August 22 at 7 pm. Check your email that day for the sign-up link.
Sign-ups will open to the general public on September 22, if there are still spots available.
Sign-ups are first-come first-served, so you will know if you are in or not as soon as you fill out the registration and pay. In order to lock in your registration, you will need to pay online at sign-up. Once the 20 spaces are filled, a wait list will be created, and if spaces become available, they will be filled from the waitlist.
It is up to members to notify the event coordinator (Retreat and Special Events Chair, or Board Secretary) if they have to cancel or if they do not wish to be waitlisted. The coordinator will attempt to fill open spaces from the waitlist. Due to the inability to announce the location at the start of registration, if you cancel within 10 days of the announcement of the location, you will get a full refund of your registration fee. If you cancel after that date and the space is not filled, you will be responsible for the full cost of the workshop. If you are on the waitlist and you decline a spot, you will not be charged.
Whenever possible, refunds will be made via the method of the original payment. The board reserves the right to withhold a processing fee on PayPal payments.
Remember: Check your email at 7 pm on August 22 for a sign-up link!
