QuiltCon 2017 Charity Quilt Challenge – Chicago MQG Style!

September 8, 2016
The QuiltCon 2017 Charity Quilt Challenge asks participants to design a quilt that “plays with scale”, and uses the specific color palette chosen by QuiltCon organizes for this challenge.
Our color palette for the QuiltCon 2017 Charity Quilt Challenge

Our QC2017 Charity Quilt is based on the Charles and Ray Eames film “Powers of Ten”, set in Chicago in 1977.  Charles and Ray Eames were 20th century husband and wife designers in the fields of architecture, furniture, textiles, and graphic design.  Their film examines our world by zooming in (to a molecular level) and zooming out (to the greater universe).

We chose a series of fifteen still images from the film to inspire the fifteen blocks in the front of our quilt.  Each block is unique in its design and construction, encouraging participation from many volunteers.

The back of the quilt is a simple number “10” in large piecing.
Once QC2017 is over, we plan to donate this quilt to DIFFA/Chicago (the Chicago chapter of Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids), a not-for-profit organization, for auction at an annual event.
We are excited and thankful to CMQG members that have already signed up to participate – all fifteen blocks on the front have Makers!  We can still use more help; open tasks include piecing the back, assisting with the label, or serving as a reserve block maker in case of emergency.
Kits with fabric and directions for the blocks, the back, the binding, and the sleeve are ready for distribution at the September Meeting on Sunday the 18th.
