November 2017 Meeting Recap & Announcements

December 6, 2017

This month’s meeting  was all about Unfinished Objects (UFOs). This meeting was led my Member Debbie Pine and Vice President Heather Kinion. They led the group through some tips and tricks to get your UFO situation under control.

Some members dove deep into their closets to bring some projects that have been languishing for years (or even decades). We broke into small groups with each group discussing a members specific project.  Each group came up with ideas on how to breathe new life into their UFO. In some instances, members were just ecstatic that someone else was willing to take it off their hands. We had some lively discussions and new BFFs were made.

Our lovely hosts, Heather Kinion and Debbie Pine

We weren’t kidding when we said BFFs were made!

Mini Swap

Member Emily Lang is coordinating our guild’s “Secret Mini Quilt Swap.” At the meeting, she collected and distributed “inspiration fabric” that was provided by each participant. If you didn’t provide a scrap of fabric or pick up your partner’s, please do so at the December meeting. The mini quilts will be due at the March, 2018 meeting. Please be very cautious of what you share on social media as you don’t want to give away any clues as to who your swap partner is. Remember: it’s a secret, shhhh!!!

Announcements

Our guild has a newsletter called “The Full Bobbin.” One of its purposes is to promote all the AWESOME stuff our members are doing. If you have a quilt(s) in a show or magazine, or a teaching gig, or are hosting an event we want to know about it!!! Please make sure to contact Jenni so it can be included in the next issue.

Membership Chairperson Rebecca Cynamon-Murphy announced that our 2018 guild membership renewal is underway.  She asked that you renew by November 30. Here’s more information including a link to the renewal form. Please contact Rebecca if you have any questions.

The MQG has announced the Charity Challenge for QuiltCon 2018. The topic is “Exploring Modern Traditionalism.” President Amy Struckmeyer distributed fabric and block instructions to members at the October meeting and completed blocks are due back at the December 10 meeting.  Please don’t forget!!!

Would you like to get more involved in the guild?  How about serving on the Board? The new board will take effect in April 2018, and the only requirement to serve on the board is that you are a member of the guild for at least one year (as of April 2018).  To become a nominee, please contact Heather no later than February 9, 2018 or if you have any questions related to any of the board positions.

Treasurer Dani Miller reminded members that you can financially support our guild while shopping on Amazon. The CMQG is a 501(c)(3) organization and a portion (0.5%) of all eligible purchases  can be donated to our guild. Here is more information on Amazon Smile and how you can get your existing account set up. Please contact Dani if you have any questions.

Our December 10 meeting will be our Holiday Potluck and Social. There will be a blind gift swap where you bring a wrapped handmade gift that took you two hours or less to make. Unlike in past years, time is your only limit on what you can make as a gift. But please remember that our membership practices many faiths, so make your gift non-denominational. If you need some ideas on what to make check out the guild’s Pinterest Board, though you are certainly free to make whatever you want. Participation is optional. There will also be a Potluck so bring a sweet or savory dish to share, including serving utensils. If you have any questions contact Carol Woole.

Our January 2018 meeting will be a Member Trunk Show. This is a guild favorite and you won’t want to miss!!!

Our February 2018 meeting will be a sew-in at Thimbles https://thimblesquilts.com/ in Lockport, IL.  Our meeting time will be from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Please note the change in venue and time for this meeting only.

Our March, 2017 meeting will be “All about Bindings.”

Our Special Events Chairperson Laura McDowell Hopper is looking for locations to host guild workshops and sew-ins.  She is looking for a space that can accommodate 24 people with ample electrical outlets for their sewing machines and to set-up several ironing stations throughout the room.  Must also be reasonably priced.  If you know of any place in your area or if you have any questions please contact Laura

Charity Update

Members Sarah Shulman and Dianne Bienick are leading an effort to make quilts for Local Veterans through the Road Home Program. Two quilts are currently in process. We still have one more quilt planned and we will slowly work towards getting it pieced. There are plenty of ways to get involved so please contact Sarah S. or Dianne if you are interested.

Member Debbie Pine provided some foundation paper squares to make string blocks. Refer to the September meeting recap for instructions (including a video) on how to piece these blocks.  Please bring your completed block(s) to the December meeting where Debbie will be collecting them. They will be used to make a charity quilt(s) in 2018.
