Here is a recap and announcements from November’s meeting, as well as information on December’s upcoming meeting –
Guest Speaker Heidi Parkes:
This month we hosted the amazing Heidi Parkes for a presentation and discussion on “Intentional Mending”. Heidi has been mending her clothes since she was a child though her technique has certainly changed over time. Today Heidi is inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi where the mending itself is a visible addition to the piece as it moves forward with an extended life. She shared with us several of her (and her boyfriends) clothes that are in various stages of mending so we can see her process. Several of our members brought in clothes and a quilt which Heidi offered advice on how to mend. It was a wonderful afternoon.

QuiltCon 2017:
Members Emily Handley and Melissa Bogusch are leading the effort on our guilds QuiltCon 2017 Charity Quilt Challenge. Members were expected to bring in their completed blocks to the meeting. There will be 15 blocks in total all custom designed by Emily and Melissa. The design is based on Charles and Ray Eames film “Power of Ten”. If you haven’t seen the video we strongly encourage you to do so. They plan to share more of the quilt as it progresses. To learn more about the project and to see the video it’s based on click here. Announcements:
- 2017 Membership Renewal is now OPEN! Dues are $55 (same as 2016). If you would like to purchase the guild’s limited edition T-Shirt or Hoodie you will need to renew by December 10th. Actually, our Membership Chairperson Sally Prokopec is asking everyone to renew by December 10th to enable her to get an accurate member count to The MQG. Click here for info on how to renew by check or credit card.
- Our next meeting will be Sunday, December 11th and will be a potluck and gift swap. As inspiration for the gift swap, some of our members demonstrated how to make different types of fabric containers back in our September meeting. Click here to see their tutorial links, but know that members participating in the December gift swap are encouraged to make whatever they like (you’re not limited to making just fabric containers!). This will be a blind swap and our swap coordinator (Sarah Shulman) is asking that we make sure our gifts are not holiday specific, please.
- The guild will be hosting Chawne Kimber for an Improv Hand Quilting workshop and lecture in January 2017 (same weekend as our meeting). The workshop will be limited to 20 members and will be filled on a “first come first served basis”. Payment ($75) is required at the time of registration to confirm your seat in the class. Registration opened on Tuesday, November 29 at 7:00 pm. More details here. To learn more about Chawne click here.

- Members from the Sinnissippi Quilters Inc. of Rockford, IL were on hand to sell raffle tickets for their annual fundraiser. The winner will receive a quilt made by their members. They are also hosting a Quilt Show on May 6-7 in Loves Park, IL. For more info click here.
- Charity Updates:
- This was the final meeting to deliver quilts, pillows, and pouches for Sarah’s Inn. Vice President Amy Struckmeyer will be making a delivery shortly after Thanksgiving. Amy mentioned she will be writing a blog post to share all the items that were made.
