Chicago Modern Quilt Guild’s participation in the Modern Quilt Guild Charity Project
Ready for a new challenge? One that is due December 9?
The blocks submitted to the Modern Quilt Guild are being turned into 46 quilts for the beds at the Austin’s Children Shelter. Participating guilds have received at least 7 blocks.
The above shows our 7 blocks sent from the Modern Quilt Guild. So how do we turn these 7 blocks into a 68” x 88” quilt (or up to 72” x 92”) ready to be mailed January 26, 2013, to Austin, Texas?
Here are the guidelines:
- Supply batting (which we have – donation from Warm and Natural)
- Supply backing
- Supply binding
- Quilt densely (Terri Karls will take care of this!)
- Include a 4” sleeve – these quilts will be hung at QuiltCon before going to the shelter but then the sleeve will be removed
According to the established guidelines, we can:
- Create and add additional blocks
- Add negative space
- Do a combination
The Modern Quilt Guild is interested in each guild’s process with a series of blog posts. This is our first post. And like the Modern Quilt Guild, our Chicago Modern Quilt Guild is going to try to attempt fulfilling the above tasks and requirements as on-line involvement.
Each one of these 7 blocks has a dimension of 12”. The first block shown has a width of 18”. The narrowest block, the one with the white borders is 10” wide. So here is your challenge: by printing out this document, create a layout – one that can be voted on at the Dec 9 meeting.
Print out this document and begin to play around with these blocks. Maybe put this on construction paper that would serve as the background. White? Yellow? Bright limey green? Dark orange? You get the idea…
Please be prepared to volunteer for one of the above tasks mentioned – creating the label, adding the binding, washing the quilt, etc. Bring in your rough layout to the December 9 Sew-In!
