June 2019 Meeting Recap: Sew-In

July 9, 2019

We had a lovely sew-in last month at the Wheaton Community Center. About 25 of us gathered to sew personal projects, charity projects, and, well, anything we felt like!

Laura Hartrich shows us a recent finish

Many of us have been working on our quilts for Project Night Night, and folks are making the most darling creations. Adamandia’s mom sent over a couple dozen handmade stuffed animals that we can give away with our quilts; there are a handful that are still unclaimed if you haven’t picked one up yet, and they’ll be available at the July meeting.

Announcements

There were a lot of announcements at the meeting. Here’s what we covered:

Join us on July 21, 2:00-5:00, at Rush Oak Park Hospital for Summer School! Come with your questions, and be ready to learn lots! We’ll break into small groups and help each other answer members’ questions about technique troubles, design struggles, etc. Our guild is full of expertise and at this meeting we’ll all be teaching each other.

August 18, 2:00-5:00 at Rush Oak Park Hospital: our Summer Potluck! Bring a dish to share, socialize and sew (hand-sewing welcome), and don’t forget show and tell!

September 21, 10:00-4:00, (Location TBA): Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill workshop*NOTE: Registration for this workshop will go live July 20 at 5:00pm

September 22, 2:00-5:00, Rush Oak Park Hospital Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill lecture and trunk show*NOTE: There will be a programming committee meeting from 12:00 – 1:30, and all are welcome and encouraged to attend

October 20, 2:00-5:00, Rush Oak Park Hospital: Curved Piecing Demo! Learn different techniques, including the curved letters design we hope to incorporate in our QuiltCon charity quilt!

We are still seeking ideas for the 2020 QuiltCon Charity Quilt. We’ve had lots of good input so far, and VP Jenni Grover is gathering all of your ideas. Email her or speak to her at the next meeting.

The CMQG Book Project

We’ve been working behind the scenes to get the jurying website ready for you through ArtCall, which is the same system used by QuiltCon, SAQA, and most of the other major quilt shows and museums. You can now enter and you have until August 15, we’ve extended it by two weeks.

You can submit finished quilts, quilt tops, or design ideas that can be completed in a couple months’ time. Remember that what we hope to produce is a history of the guild, so while we all get really excited about what we are making right now, we are looking for quilts that span the entire ten years of our guild. That means that some newer work might not get accepted if you have a beloved quilt from many years ago!

Here’s the link to enter your quilts

You will have up to five entries, so select quilts from your entire time as a member of the guild, and also please submit quilts that were made in or inspired by workshops you’ve taken in the guild! We aren’t looking for the same things that a show like QuiltCon looks for. You can submit quilts made from patterns, quilts made in workshops, or QuiltCon rejects.

The judges will be looking for quilts that help tell the story of this guild, regardless of how long you’ve been a member, whether or not your quilt is an original design, or your skill level (which is subjective anyway).

It will cost $3 to submit your five quilts, which will help us defray the cost of the jurying system. We are still seeking a guild member who has professional graphic design experience, and we would also love to hear from you if you’re interested in being the sales manager for the book and handling and arranging the pre-orders and any shipping to out of state members!

We’re also looking for people interested in helping to plan an anniversary party for the guild for our March, 2020 meeting, which is one month after the anniversary so it’s better weather.

Donna finished this quilt, and it has lots of lovely purple!

As you can see, we had a lovely day, and there was lots to be discussed. We hope you’ll join us at our next meeting and contribute your ideas and creative energy – and have lots of fun!

All meetings are 2-5 pm on the third Sunday of the month, unless otherwise noted.

This month’s meeting is on Sunday, July 21, 2019 – 2-5pm
