Chicago MQG Welcomes Fabric Weaving Teacher Tara Curtis for a Workshop and Lecture

March 8, 2018
If you’re interested in learning new fabric manipulation techniques, you won’t want to miss our workshop with WEFTY Needle inventor and fabric weaving instructor Tara Curtis! Our fabric weaving workshop will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 10am to 4pm in the Centennial Room of Rush Oak Park Hospital.

Tara’s lecture, “Innovative Craft,” explores ways she and others have tapped into the Maker Movement to bring tech innovations to their art and craft businesses. The lecture will be on Sunday, April 22, 2018 from 2 to 5pm, also in the Centennial Room of Rush Oak Park Hospital. The lecture is free for members and $10 for non-members.

Tara will lead a workshop on her Woven Star Variations fabric weaving where guild members can learn to make an ombre star, solid star, or rainbow star. Take a look at some examples below!

You’ll be guided through weaving your own star panel that can be turned into a pillow, bag, quilt, wallet, and more. Here are some examples of how Tara has used her fabric weavings creatively.

No sewing machines are required for this workshop! If you sign up, you will be sent information about the homework you’ll need to prepare and all the supplies you’ll need to bring (pins, fusible interfacing, fabric). Prior to the workshop, participants need to make 18 width of fabric strips for weaving. Instructions for making those strips will be emailed to all participants one month prior to the workshop. Please pack a lunch to bring to this workshop or plan to eat during our lunch break at the Rush Oak Park Hospital cafeteria.

The workshop is open to 24 people and costs $45. If more than 24 people register for the workshop, we will hold a lottery. Registration is open to members only through March 31; then we will open registration to non-members if there are still available spaces. Here’s more information on registering for workshops.

WORKSHOP UPDATE (as of 3/20/19): All who have registered as of March 19 are “in.”  There are still a couple of openings that are available on a first come, first served basis.  Once the workshop is full, all new registrants will be placed on a waiting list.  If the workshop is not full after March 31, registration will open to non-members.

All meetings are 2-5 pm on the third Sunday of the month, unless otherwise noted.

This month’s meeting is on Sunday, March 18, 2018.

Meeting location:
