Chicago MQG and #quiltsforpulse

September 18, 2016

There are events, horrible devastating events that take our breath away, make us shake our heads and pull upon our hearts to find some way to respond.  The mass shooting at the Orlando, FL nightclub called Pulse was one of those events.  Our hearts needed to respond.  Our hands got busy.

The Orlando MQG president, Alissa Lapinsky was moved to respond.  Days after the event she put a call out to whoever would respond:  Let’s cover those directly effected by this shooting with quilted love.  We in Chicago were moved to help.  The pictures included in this post are the eight quilts that we are sending to Orlando this month.

Quilters heal the world one stitch, one seam, one quilt at a time.”  —Latifah Saafir

Our eight completed quilts may seem like a drop in a really big ocean of pain.  But is it something.   I believe that by focusing our hands to make beautiful things that can physically warm people we have been agents of healing and love.

Thank you to all who sent blocks to the guild and for those who helped assemble, quilt, and bind.  A special thanks goes to Laura McDowell Hopper (@sonicstitches on IG) whose passion for this project was inspiring to me.

Make sure to check out the hashtag #quiltsforpulse on Instagram to see quilts made by hundreds of people from all around the world for this amazing cause.
