We had a terrific meeting on November 18. Member Amy Struckmeyer led a discussion on needles and threads for domestic machines. We learned many new useful tips and tricks and were reminded of some oldies but goodies that we may have forgotten.
One tip that stuck out was that even if you are using the recommend needle size to coordinate with your thread choice, if your stitches are uneven and you have adjusted the tension, the needle suggested may not always be the right choice and a different size may need to be used. Thank you to Amy for an informative afternoon!
Upcoming Meetings
December 16 (we will meet on our usual 3rd Sunday this year): We will be hosting our holiday potluck & gift swap. Please bring something yummy to share, think sweet or savory. If you’re interested in the swap, there’s no sign-up needed. Simply bring a small, handmade sewn item, wrapped but with NO LABEL ON THE PACKAGING indicating who made the gift. Please spend no more than about two hours on it, and no extras are necessary – just make something that you would want to receive. Please AVOID holiday-specific fabrics and gifts, so we can be as inclusive as possible. We encourage you to add a small note on the inside saying who made it, so the recipient knows who to thank. If you need ideas, please visit our Pinterest boards, like Pincushion Inspiration, or Quick Gifts Inspiration.
January 20, 2019: Member Trunk Show: Five members will present a mini trunk show of their work and talk about their journey and experiences in quilting. Come support your guild members and be inspired by these members’ variety of styles and techniques! Sign-ups for the spring retreat will also begin; more details to come in the Full Bobbin.
February 17, 2019: We are planning a sew-in – details coming soon. If necessary, this is the day we will have the lottery for the spring retreat.
March 19, 2019: We welcome Joe Cunningham.
The Full Bobbin Monthly Newsletter Info
We all hope you are enjoying our monthly newsletter, “The Full Bobbin.” If you are in a quilt show or magazine, have a teaching gig, or are hosting an event we want to know about it. Please make sure to contact Social Media and Communications Chairperson Jenni Grover so it can be included. Also, contact Jenni if are a new member and you have yet received an issue.
Check out one of our newest features to The Full Bobbin, “Get Your Quilty Wishes Granted,” based on the popular Instagram hashtag #getyourquiltywishesgranted. If you are unfamiliar, let’s say you are working on a particular project and need more yellow scraps or need more eye spy fabrics or whatever, send an email to the Full Bobbin (just hit reply on a previous issue of the Full Bobbin) with your name and what you are looking for. Each month we will publish as many as we can. Members can then bring the items to the next meeting. It’s a fun way to pass along something you may not need, but another quilter can use.

We are excited to partner with the University of Chicago Medical Center to present a Science and Medicine Quilt Challenge that will result in a Chicago Modern Quilt Guild show hanging in one of their public art galleries inside the hospital and its surrounding campus. The exact location will be decided once the number and size of the entered quilts is narrowed down, but please check the blog post for the specific dates and the sign-up link.
We have a local Modern Quilt Junior Group in Evanston. It is coordinated by our member Shannon Dangerfield. If you have extra fabric or notions that you would like to donate, please bring them to any guild meeting. If Shannon is unable to attend, we will make sure the donations get to her.
